All taught one-on-one, all flown in the same Piper Cherokee PA-28-180. The FAA sequence runs Private, then Instrument, then Commercial, then CFI.
01 Private Pilot License The Private Pilot certificate lets you fly for personal and recreational purposes — and it is the essential stepping stone to a career in aviation.
You must be at least 17, hold at least a third-class FAA medical, pass the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test, and fly a minimum of 40 hours — including at least 20 with an instructor and 10 solo, with cross-country, night and instrument training — before the checkride with an FAA examiner.
Estimated total: $11,000–$13,000, paid lesson by lesson at $125/hr for the aircraft and $35/hr for instruction. Every student progresses at their own pace; the estimate is based on average Part 61 completion times.
Start with a $175 Discovery Flight — your first lesson, at the controls of the Cherokee.
02 Instrument Rating (IFR) An instrument rating authorizes you to fly under instrument flight rules (IFR) — in clouds and in weather where visibility is limited.
You must hold at least a private pilot certificate, log at least 50 hours of cross-country pilot-in-command time, and complete 40 hours of instrument time, at least 15 of them with an authorized instructor.
Train on the Cherokee’s modern glass avionics with a Certificated Flight Instructor — Instrument (CFII).
Estimated total: $9,000–$11,000, paid as you fly. Finish with the FAA knowledge test and an instrument checkride.
03 Commercial Pilot License (CPL) The Commercial Pilot certificate lets you fly for compensation or hire — the step that turns flying into a career.
You must be at least 18, hold a private pilot certificate and at least a second-class FAA medical, and read, speak, write and understand English.
Log a minimum of 250 total hours, including 100 hours pilot-in-command, 50 hours cross-country, 20 hours of training with an instructor and 10 hours solo, then pass the FAA Commercial Pilot Knowledge Test and checkride.
Estimated total: $10,000–$12,000, paid as you fly.
04 Flight Instructor (CFI) Earn your flight instructor certificate and learn to teach what you fly, one-on-one with a working CFII.
Train one-on-one with an instructor who holds both the CFI and the instrument instructor (CFII) certificates.
Call 225-614-8445 to talk through prerequisites, structure and cost for your CFI training.
